New weekly newspapers and a television station are trying to tap into a market of some 220,000 Spanish speakers in the Puget Sound region, who represent about 10 percent of the population and have growing market power.
Fisher Broadcasting's KUNSTV went on the air in July, broadcasting as the Seattle-based affiliate of Univision, the national Spanish-language TV network. The station is producing Spanish-language newscasts at 5 p.m. And 11 p.m., using resources shared with Fisher's KOMO-TV in Seattle and KATU-TV in Portland.
Back on the ground, the Kennewick-based bilingual newspaper Tu Decides/You Decide began circulating around Puget Sound in July. With the Puget Sound expansion, it will have a distribution of 22,000 copies statewide, owners told the Associated Press.
It will compete with La Raza del Noroeste, which was launched in Everett in 2006 by The Daily Herald Co., publishers of the Everett Herald.
