The Laptop Effect

Washington State University's Tri-Cities branch campus enrolled its first classes of freshmen and sophomores this fall, after 17 years of having only juniors and seniors. As a result, WSU Tri-Cities reported a record fall semester head count of 849 full-time-equivalent students, up 145 from the previous high. Being a freshman at the branch campus has its perks - the 117 students in the inaugural class all got free laptops, courtesy of defense contractor Lockheed Martin, along with offers of $6,000 scholarships, with half of the money awarded now and the rest during their senior year. WSU's overall enrollment is also up this year, even at campuses that aren't giving away computers. The school reported that a combined 3,208 freshmen have decided to go Coug, at its campuses in Pullman, the Tri-Cities, Spokane and Vancouver. That's the largest class of first-year students in WSU history and a 19 percent increase over last year's enrollment.
