By March 2009, the Bavarian-themed village Leavenworth hopes to open a passenger train station to further boost tourism and to enable visitors from western Washington to avoid driving through the Cascades.

The train stop, planned on Amtrak's Empire Builder route between Seattle and Chicago, comes by way of more than $700,000 in local, state and federal funds. Construction is expected to begin in late spring or early summer.
