FEDERAL WAY -- Daniel Fulton, president of Weyerhaeuser Co., has been promoted to chief executive officer, while outgoing CEO Steve Rogel steps down. Rogel, who joined the company in 1997, will remain nonexecutive chairman.

KIRKLAND -- Finnish cell phone maker Nokia is building a research and development facility in Kirkland that will have room for 125 employees. The 25,000--squarefoot office space will be convenient to the Redmond headquarters of Twango, a mobile media start-up that Nokia bought in 2007.

REDMOND -- Microsoft has bought Farecast, a technology company that offers predictions of future air fares -- and allows consumers to lock in those prices. The sale price was $115 million, but it seems an out-of-left-field deal for Microsoft, which has been bolstering its online media holdings with last year's acquisition of aQuantive and this year's aborted $47.5 billion attempt to take over Yahoo. Farecast does make money through online advertising, however, and the two companies have similar visions for online search technology, one investor told the Seattle Post-Intelligencer.

SEATTLE ? HSC Real Estate Inc., a Seattle firm with 1,100 employees and more than 34,000 units under management, has been acquired by Riverstone Residential Group. The Texas company manages more than 890 properties and is the largest property services company in the country.
